great x-pectations

Yup, finally I saw it last night. The much awaited X-3, dubbed 'The Last Stand'.

Firstly, children, I must confess that I had prepared meself for disappointment soon after Bryan Singer threw away this beautiful baby to go get pregnant with the Big Blue himself. Yeah yeah, I mean the return of the man of steel, the last son of Krypton, the big all-American male bimbo, yada yada yada.

But to my utter surprise, my children, I wasn't disappointed, no. Something that's as rare for us cynics as, say, tawa roti in a Delhi dhaba.

Now I have no idea how many of you have had the pleasure of dipping your toes and twinkies into the X-Men lores. And I admit, it may get a little obscure, okay, an absolute OHT (Over Head Transmission) for the utterly uninitiated. But those who do know a little of the children of atom and the complicated characters therein and the alternate timelines and all that terribly confusing, and yet deliciously delightful stuff, shall have their rewards. As I say, "And the geek shall inherit the earth (Earth-616 and many others)."

Okay, now I shall attempt to tread the fine line between spoilers and plot give-aways on one side and intriguing highpoints of the movie to seduce you, on the other.

Some new characters were introduced. On the good side, most notably Hank McCoy aka Beast, who was impressive, Kitty Pryde aka Shadowcat and Peter (Piotor) Rasputin aka Colossus, not to mention Warren Worthington-III aka Angel (who looks a little sissy as opposed to the uber-hunky Angel in the comic series). On the evil side there were, I think, Callisto (without the eye patch and tentacled arms) or M/Monet (without the tattoo-thing over her eyes), Multiple Man, Juggernaut, and I suppose, Quill, maybe even Spike (of the cartoon series X-Men Evolution), and an androgynous mutant who bore an uncanny resemblance to TAFKAP (Prince for the ignorant lot) whom I did not recognise and who could create havoc-wreaking sound waves by merely clapping (like, tee hee, good ole homebrewed hizras).

Some pretty big characters were ticked off like that. Think big as Albus Dumbledore in Harry Potter-6, or Gandalf The Grey in LOTR-1. 'The Phoenix Saga' and the recent 'Astonishing X-Men' by much acclaimed writer Joss Wheddon were the major inspirations behind the X-3 plot.

All in all, 'twas a delight to watch, old friends, an utter delight.

And, uh, happy watching.
